Drivers have the final say
A bus or coach driver is not able to put a student off a vehicle on route and leave them stranded but has options that include:
- Returning to the school or college
- Driving to a police station
- Driving to their company depot
- Stopping and calling for assistance from the police to remove a student that is causing a safety breach
If a student is regularly causing a safety breach that could cause the driver to be involved in a road traffic collision then the driver has the same legal authority as an airline pilot or captian of a ferry. S/he can refuse to allow a passenger to board. In law, PCV drivers have the final say over who is carried.
